Huksendáidda – arkitektuvra Sámis = arkitektur i Sápmi = architecture in Sápmi

Introduksjon og en trespråklig veiviser til fordypning i samisk bygningskultur og arkitektur – på nordsamisk, norsk og engelsk.

I Huksendáidda kan du lese om blant annet Girjegumpi, samisk byggeskikk, behandlingen av det samiske i historien om arkitektur i Norge etter andre verdenskrig, hvordan gjenreising og fornorsking gikk hånd i hånd, fenomenet «kjempelávvu» og dessuten få en oversikt over samisk arkitektur på norsk side av Sápmi.

Boken sprang ut av foredragene fra et seminar om samisk arkitektur som Nasjonalmuseet arrangerte i forbindelse med utstillingen Girjegumpi. Samisk arkitekturbibliotek med kunstneren Joar Nangos nomadiske arkitekturbibliotek i 2021.

In suicidological research, it is well known that suicide rates differ, sometimes to a great extent, between countries, sexes, religious and ethnic populations. It has been suggested that in-depth exploration of social, cultural, contextual and historical perspectives on suicide is needed to explain this, and increase efficacy of prevention efforts. Sámi are the Indigenous people who traditionally live in northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and north-western Russia (the Kola Peninsula). Generally, Sámi seem to enjoy good health along with the majority populations, at least in jurisdictions where some data is available (no Russian data is available). However, suicide is considered a major public health issue among Sámi, as it is globally. Sámi men have died more often by suicide than the majority populations in Nordic countries, ranging from 17% excess in Sweden (1961–2000), to 150% excess in Finland (1997–2005). An increased focus on the importance of reducing suicide among Sámi has led to creation of a ‘Plan for suicide prevention among Sámi in Norway, Sweden and Finland’ in 2017. However, research on this issue is still very limited and mainly includes cohort studies on suicide mortality and cross-sectional studies on suicidal behaviour. There are no studies that have evaluated suicide prevention programs among Sámi.

The overarching aim of this thesis was to explore and elucidate how suicide is understood among Sámi and what specific actions have been taken to prevent suicide among Sámi in Nordic parts of Sápmi.

The findings in studies I and II show that there are ways of investigating culture-specific understandings of suicide among Sámi, and that suicide among Sámi is currently understood to be linked to the difficulties of maintaining Sámi identities. As regards prevention, it is suggested that the dominant rationales for suicide prevention were addressing shortcomings on individual and relational levels, and raising awareness in the general public. This threatens to obscure more critical approaches such as broadening perspectives in prevention planning, improving health systems for Sámi, and promoting cultural empowerment among Sámi. To improve evaluation and identify most promising practices, increased support regarding development of plans and implementation for evaluation components is needed.

Arvvas: Dás Dál (CD)

Arvvas er en duo som består av den samiske joikeren Sara Marielle Gaup og den norske bassisten og sangeren Steinar Raknes. Arvvas blander Joik og Americana i sin musikk, og sammen skaper de et unikt musikalsk univers. De skriver låtene sammen, med tekster på samisk og engelsk.

Duoen har nå gitt ut sitt andre album, Dás Dál, som betyr Her Nå. Plata inneholder store kontraster, både musikalsk og tekstlig. Den veksler mellom lyriske, vakre stemninger til intense og rocka groover, og mellom humor og vemod.

Religions around the Arctic: Source Criticism and Comparisons

På et seminar avviklet ved universitetet i Bergen i 2018 var lærde fra Danmark, Finland, Norge  og Sverige samlet for å presentere og diskutere forskjellige former for kildekritikk og sammenligninger med eksempler fra Arktis og subarktiske regioner av Eurasia og Nord-Amerika. Et utvalg av foredragene som ble holdt på dette seminaret er nå publisert i dette nummeret.

At a seminar at the University of Bergen, Norway, in September 2018, scholars from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden presented and discussed various forms of source criticism and comparison with examples from the Arctic and Sub-Arctic regions of Eurasia and North America. A selection of the papers read at the seminar are published in this volume.

Each of the chapters in the first part compares local phenomena from two or more cultural contexts.

The second part gives examples of different forms of source criticism in the analysis of indigenous Sami religion. The functions of a newly found ritual drum is discussed in relation to contemporary written sources (Dikka Storm & Trude Fonneland), the court proceedings from a witchcraft trial in 1692 is discussed with the help of Gérard Genette’s category ‘voice’ (Liv Helene Willumsen), and a content analysis of an introduction to indigenous Sami religion shows that the editor added text of his own to the original manuscript (Konsta Kaikkonen).

In the third part, the area is widened to other parts of the Arctic. Here, a selection of theoretical perspectives is used to illuminate local empirical material. They give examples of how Native North American bear rituals and sweat bath traditions can be analysed with the help of an ecology of religion model and ritual theories, respectively (Riku Hämäläinen), of how Soviet researchers used the concepts of ‘spirits’ and ‘gods’ when they analysed the world view of the Nganasan (Olle Sundström), and of how representatives of academia have been instrumental in the ‘finding, claiming, and authorizing’ of Sakha religions (Liudmila Nikanorova).

Coming of age in indigenous societies

Altfor ofte blir vi fortalt at aldring er noe negativt, mens blant urfolk er aldring ikke en degradering, men snarere en viktig del av livets syklus.

I denne boka forteller eldre om livets høst med egne bilder. Dette tverrfaglige forskningsprosjektet bruker en forskningspraksis kalt «photo stories».

Samarbeidende institusjoner er NORCE, UiT Norges Arktiske Universitetet, Høgskulen på Vestlandet, NORD Universitet og Universitetet i Helsinki. Det har vært deltakere fra Tayal-samfunnet i Taiwan, nordsamisk område, både sjøsamiske- og innlandssamiske, samt sørsamisk område i Norge.

De eldre har blitt fulgt av forskere, og utstyrt med kameraer for å ta bilder av sin egen hverdag. Fortellingene i boka handler om kjærlighet, glede, bekymringer og motstandskraft. Hovedbudskapet i denne boken er at relasjoner er avgjørende for et godt hverdagsliv til deltakerne, både relasjoner til sine landskap og områder, familie, tradisjonelle aktiviteter, mat og dyr.

Kunnskapene og perspektivene som formidles i denne boken er viktige for å øke majoritetskulturens forståelse av hva det innebærer å være et eldre menneske i et urfolksområde, og for å skape et samfunn med likeverd og rettferd i både Norge, Taiwan og verden for øvrig.

The craft practices of Indigenous peoples from all over the world have been getting increased attention and appreciation globally over the last few decades. It has also become a topic that has occupied its fair share of discourse in academia and in art education. As a contribution to this interest in Indigenous art and crafts practices, we offer this book on Sámi duodji.

Duodji is the artistic crafts form of the Indigenous people of the European Arctic. Duodji refers not only to the end result, the finished object itself, but also describes the whole process – from the incipient idea to the final product. Duodji demonstrates a holistic circle of creation, how nature and humans collaborate in recognising, visualising, and shaping items that serve the need for both practical use and aesthetic form.

The publication is edited by the professors Gunvor Guttorm and Harald Gaski, and contains essays from eleven prominent Sámi scholars, duojárat, and writers from North, South, and Lule Sámi areas. The essays are presented in Lule, South or North Sámi as well as in English. The publication also contains a wide-ranging selection of photographs of duodji by more than thirty contemporary duojárat.

The book is well-suited both as background and text material for education in crafts, as well as a resource for the theory and practice of Sámi duodji as an Indigenous art form with long roots in the Arctic North.

Indigenous religion(s) are afterlives of a particular sort, shaped by globalising discourses on what counts as an indigenous religion on the one hand and the continued presence of local traditions on the other.

Focusing on the Norwegian side of Sápmi since the 1970s, this book explores the reclaiming of ancestral pasts and notions of a specifically Sámi religion. It connects religion, identity and nation-building, and takes seriously the indigenous turn as well as geographical and generational distinctions.
